Mother’s day is second only to Christmas in gift giving and this year the average person will spend $126.90. Total spending for the 82.8 million moms in the US is expected to reach $14.6 billion.
Most will send mom a greeting card (81.5%), but if mom is tech savvy, Hallmark now offers Webcam Greetings, a step up from a “Happy Mother’s Day” text.
For moms more into bling, the 26.2 percent of people planning on buying baubles can shop at any of the 27,484 jewelry stores in the US.
Also popular are flowers, nearly two-thirds (65.2%) will buy blossoms totaling $1.9 billion.
If mommie dearest needs a new outfit, the 28.4% planning on buying clothes and accessories should avoid the wire hangers. According to the Hanger Network, 3.5 billion wire hangers get dumped into U.S. landfills every year, the equivalent of 60,000 cars.
